Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the fastest-growing diseases worldwide, with significant social, economic, and healthcare impacts. Disease complications-cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, vision loss, and neuropathies-heavily affect both patients' quality of life and the national healthcare system. Diabetes remains one of Greece's major public health challenges, with a prevalence of 11.9% compared to 9.2% in other European countries.
Effective daily diabetes management requires accurate and continuous glucose monitoring. Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) systems are internationally recognized as among the most effective technologies for improved glycemic control, reducing hypoglycemia, preventing complications, and avoiding hospitalizations.
Nevertheless, Greece remains one of the few EU countries that does not reimburse CGM systems for patients with type 2 diabetes on intensive insulin regimens, creating significant inequalities in access to innovative care.
